FRIEDRICH VON AMERLING (Austrian / 1803-1887)

Friedrich von Amerling was born in Vienna to a poor family, and had to overcome many obstacles to pursue an artistic career. He began by colouring maps and engravings, before entering the Vienna Academy of Fine Art, where he studied between 1816 and 1824. In 1826 he moved to England, where he studied with Lawrence. He also studied with Vernet in Paris. His career was a glittering one, and he painted around 1000 society portraits, as well as history, religious, and genre paintings.
