LOUISE ABBEMA (French / 1853-1927)

Louise Abbéma was born in Étampes (Essone) in 1853. A student of Chaplin, Henner, and Carolus-Duran, Louise Abbéma exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français until 1926. Her first success was with a portrait of Sarah Bernhardt in 1876; Bernhardt was rumoured to be her lover. Louise Abbéma was primarily a portrait painter. We have etchings after Louise Abbéma by Félix Buhot and Henri Toussaint.
