ALFRED EDWARD EAST (English / 1844-1913)

The painter and etcher Alfred Edward East was born in Kettering in 1844. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art. East's art was highly influenced by the work of the Barbizon School, the precursors of French Impressionism. Alfred East was one of the most popular and successful British painters of his day, and was knighted in 1910; hence he is often referred to as Sir Alfred East. Alfred East died in London in 1913.
