PETER ACKERMANN (German / 1934-2007)

Peter Ackermann was born in Jena in 1934. After studying art at the Free University of Berlin and at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst, Berlin, Peter Ackermann made his name in the 1960s as one of the most prominent artists in the Phantastischen Realismus (Fantastic Realism) school. Ackermann's etchings of this period evoke German Romanticism in their Pop Art juxtaposition of architectural ruins and industrial machinery. From 1972-73 Peter Ackermann was a guest lecturer at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Art; from 1976-77 he was a Professor at the University of Fine Arts in Berlin; from 1977 he was a Professor at the Karlsruhe Academy. The art of Peter Ackermann was the subject of restrospective exhibitions at Karlsruhe (1997), Kalkar (2001) and Mainz (2004). Peter Ackermann died in Valecchie in Italy in 2007.
