HANS (JEAN) ARP (German / 1886-1966)

Hans Arp, also called Jean Arp, was born in Alsace. He studied at the École des Arts et Métiers, Strasbourg and the Kunstschule, Weimar, and subsequently at the Académie Julian in Paris, In 1912 Arp met Robert and Sonia Delaunay and Vasily Kandinsky, and in 1914 Modigliani and Picasso. Alongside his wife, the artist Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Hans Arp was at the centre of several key movements in modern art - Dada, Surrealism, and the Paris-based group Abstraction-Création. He was a sculptor and a poet as well as a painter. There were Arp retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1958 and at the Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris, in 1962.
