Sheet size: 299 x 218 mm
Image size: 151 x 126 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown, scarce – Signed in plate
Superb and flawless proof of an original Rembrandt etching, reprinted from the original copperplate in 1906. Printed on high-quality laid paper, with generous margins, tipped at the top onto a grey backing sheet. Printed and published by the Gesellschaft für Vervielfältigende Kunst, Vienna, in Die Graphischen Kunste. With printed credits on the backing sheet. This printing, although late (celebrating the 300th anniversary of Rembrandt's birth), is of such high quality that the publishers stamped the work Neudruck (re-strike) on the verso, to make sure no one was fooled into thinking it a lifetime impression. The original plate was loaned for the purpose from the print cabinet of the University of Göttingen. It was formerly in the possession of Johann Friedrich von Uffenbach. Refs: Bartsch 286, Björklund 35-E, Hollstein 286. Condition: Excellent.
