IDBURY PRINTS

Etching is usually an intaglio process, but it is possible to etch the plate in such a way as to create a relief image. This zinc relief etching technique was pioneered by William Blake, and revived after WWII by the Swiss artist Max Hunziker. Hunziker popularised the technique, which he named Handätzung, among Swiss artists. We have examples of Handätzung by artists such as Pierre Baltensperger, Max Truninger, Pietro Ott, Aja Iskander Schmidlin, Ferdinand Berger, Johannes Eidt, Samuel Lier, and others. Pierre Baltensperger in particular embraced the technique with enthusiasm, and used it to its full potential.
