IDBURY PRINTS

The core figures of French Impressionism were Monet, Renoir, Manet, Morisot, Cassatt, Pissarro, Degas, and Sisley. We hold prints by or after Manet, Monet, Renoir, and Sisley. We also have a number of remarkable original etchings by one of the founders of Impressionism, Armand Guillaumin, published in the twelve months running up to the first Impressionist Exhibition in April 1874; these were probably the first fully-fledged Impressionist images seen by the general public, in the weekly journal Paris à l'eau-forte, whose art director Frédéric Regamey was sympathetic to the new art. Between 1873 and 1876, Paris à l'eau-forte offered a haven for the young artists who flocked to the Impressionist cause, notably Henri Guérard (a great friend of Manet, and husband of Manet's pupil Eva Gonzales), and Norbert Goeneutte, also a friend of Manet. Guérard and Goeneutte were both also part of the circle of Dr Paul Gachet. Paul Gachet achieved posthumous fame as the doctor who cared for Vincent Van Gogh in his last days; he was recommended by Pissarro. Gachet's own art was forged in the crucible of Impressionism; he taught Guillaumin, Cézanne, and Pissarro the art of etching (newly fashionable in the 1870s), and they made their first etchings together in Gachet's studio at Auvers; we have a number of examples of Gachet's own etchings, signed with the emblem of a duck. Other artists associated with the Impressionists include Alfred Stevens, Pierre Georges Jeanniot (friend of Manet, Pissarro and Degas), Louis Legrand, Albert Besnard, Louise Breslau, Paul Helleu and Paul Renouard. Impressionism as a style also took hold outside France, notably in America. Therefore we include figures such as Anders Zorn from Sweden, Max Liebermann and Leopold von Kalckreuth from Germany, and George Charles Aid, Maurice Sterne, Orville Houghton Peets, Everett Longley Warner, and Donald Shaw Maclaughlan from America, in this section.
