IDBURY PRINTS

Symbolism is a style that emerged in the decadent last decades of the nineteenth century, in tandem with the writings of Baudelaire and Huysman, Rimbaud and Verlaine. It sought a saturation of the senses that privileged the dream world over that of everyday reality. Key figures included Fernand Khnopff, Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, and Félicien Rops. We have a few Symbolist prints from the pioneers of the movement (Rops, Puvis de Chavannes, Fantin-Latour), but our major holdings are of younger artists under the influence of Rops, such as Henry Chapront, Armand Rassenfosse, Henri Thomas, and Frans de Geetere.
