Original etching by James McNeill Whistler, signed in the plate with his butterfly mark. Printed on laid paper by Cadart. Published by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts. With printed credits below to publisher and printer. With the discreet small collection stamp of the former owner, the Berlin University Library, centrally on the verso. Refs: Kennedy 238 ii/ii; Glasgow 246 ii/iii. There were three impressions of the first state before this edition, and five impressions of the subsequent third state. An electrotype facsimile plate was made from the plate as printed by Cadart for the Gazette des Beaux-Arts and used to print facsimiles entitled A Street in London included in Sylvester Rosa Koehler's Etching in 1885. In generally excellent condition, the image clean and fresh, with two insignificant small foxmarks in the margins, well clear of the image, and some age-toning to the paper at the edges, where is was not protected by a tissue guard. Condition: Very good, see description.
