Image size: 152 x 97 mm
Edition: 456 – Unsigned
Original etching by Martin Van Maele, printed on a hand-press by Eugène Delatre with the collaboration of the artist; the plates were destroyed after printing. Besides the edition of 456 there were 50 copies with hand-colouring. For an edition of Gringalette by Hugues Rebell, published by G. Briffaut; the first, unillustrated edition of 1905 was published by Carrington with the author masked by the pseudonym Jean de Villiot, a double cloak for Rebell, whose real name was Georges-Joseph Grassal. A dissolute young man, he ran through an enormous fortune spent on travel and prostitutes, before becoming a writer, publishing novels, poems, and works such as this showing a distinct interest in spanking and flagellation.
