JAN VERMEER – A young woman standing at a virginal, 1911
Sheet size: 300 x 220 mm
Image size: 180 x 160 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown; scarce – Unsigned
Original engraving by Carle (also known as Charles) Dupont (b. 1872) after the painting by Vermeer in the National Gallery, London. Printed by Chardon Wittmann on cream wove paper. Published by the Revue de l'art ancien et moderne. Vermeer and Dupont are credited below, along with the title (in French, Jeune femme à l'épinette), printer, and publisher. There is a band of darker paper running down the righthand edge of the sheet, where it was not protected by the tissue guard; this is easily framed out. Vermeer's name is unusually spelled in the credits as Vernseer de Delft; probably a printer's erroneous reading of someone's handwriting. Condition: Excellent.
