JOZEF ISRAELS – ņ Scheveningue, 1879
Etching
Sheet size: 295 x 425 mm
Image size: 145 x 225 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown; scarce – Unsigned
Original etching by Jozel IsraŽls depicting a fisherwoman on the beach at Scheveningue. IsraŽls printed his etchings in small numbers to give to friends; it is unusual for them to be formally editioned, as in this printed published by the revue L'Art. Writing of the etchings of IsraŽls in L'Art, Charles Tardieu describes them as a painter's etchings, and even as early as 1879 links IsraŽls to the Impressionists by describing them as "esquisses et impressions", sketches and impressions. This etching proved troublesome to photograph, and we have had to crop the image more than is desirable. The etching itself is in lovely condition, but there is some discoloration in the borders of the sheet. A close mount outside the platemark would hide this. Condition: Excellent, see description.
