JAN HILLEBRAND WIJSMULLER – A winter's landscape, 1901
Sheet size: 220x300 mm
Image size: 140x210 mm
Edition: Size of edition unknown – Signed in plate
Original etching by Philip Zilcken (Dutch, 1857-1930) after a painting by Jan Hillebrand Wijsmuller. With the signature of Wijsmuller etched in the plate. Printed chine collé, on thin china paper fixed onto a stout wove backing sheet, by Amst. Boek- en Steendrukkerij. This is one of 24 etchings by Zilcken (a significant artist in his own right) after the masters of the Hague School, tipped into copies of Dutch Painters of the Nineteenth Century by Max Rooses. There are no typeset credits below the etching, so that the fact that this is an etching by Zilcken after Wijsmuller, rather than an original etching by Wijsmuller, is not apparent from the etching itself. There is an ink mark in the sky, visible in our photo, that looks like it occurred during printing (the etching has been protected by a tissue guard ever since, with no evidence of subsequent problems); this doesn't take away from the beauty of this etching, but we have reduced the asking price as a result. Condition: Excellent, see description.
