Edition: 200 – Unsigned
Original etching with aquatint by Walter Spitzer. Printed by J.J.J. Rigal with the assistance of G. Gerbault on handmade Japon nacré paper. A double-page with a central vertical fold. Created for La Fontaine Médicis, volume 1 of the edition of Kessel's 4-volume autobiographical fiction Le Tour du Malheur published by La Belle Édition in 1963-1964, illustrated with 41 etchings by Walter Spitzer. From one of 200 suites of the etchings in definitive state with remarques, printed on Japon nacré. The justification du tirage of these books was as follows: 200 copies on vélin pur chiffon d'Arches with suites; 1000 copies on vélin chiffon de Lana without suites; and 20 artist's and collaborators' copies. There were 100 suites of the etchings in their first state, printed on Hollande Van Gelder Zonen, and 200 copies of etchings in their definitive state with remarques on Japon nacré. We have copies of both of these suites. There were also 100 suites of planches refusées on Hollande, which we have not seen. This etching is reproduced, in remarque state, on pp. 148-149 of Sibony et. al., Walter Spitzer (Fragments Éditions, 2002 Condition: Fine.
