MARIANNE CLOUZOT – Alcmène, 1954
Wood engraving
Sheet size: 313 x 250 mm
Edition: 135 – Unsigned
Jupiter fathered Heracles on Alcmene, appearing to her in the guise of her own husband. An original wood engraving by Marianne Clouzot for L'Hypocrite Sacré ou Les Métamorphose Amoureuses de Jupiter, erotic poems by Gabriel Audisio, privately published in 1954 by Marianne Clouzot, as unbound leaves, in an edition of 135 numbered copies on Rives and 25 lettered copies on Marais. This is from copy 51 on vélin pur chiffon de Rives. There were also 22 unsigned suites of these engravings on Japon. The whole page is printed a speckled grey beneath the engraving (we believe from a separate engraved block); this cosmic dust effect was probably inspired by the artist's early studies for this project, which were etchings with dust-ground aquatint (we also have one of 52 suites of these etchings). In style these prints draw on the aesthetics of surrealism, cubism, and art deco, without falling neatly into any category. The wood engravings were printed by the master printer Coulouma. None of the engravings were individually signed. Sold with a copy of the justification page. Condition: Fine.
